Mayor’s Gang and Crime Prevention SummitJanuary 26, 2010

On Saturday, January 23, the Youth Advisory Council of District 1 attended the second annual Mayor’s Gang and Crime Prevention Summit, which was held to help raise awareness about the city’s efforts to reduce gang activity in San Jose.  Mayor Chuck Reed, Santa Clara County Supervisor George Shirakawa, Police Chief Rob Davis, and San José Councilmembers Madison Nguyen, Sam Liccardo, and Nora Campos welcomed hundreds of residents and community leaders to inform the public about the Task Force, which brings together law enforcement, community-based organizations, schools, and various government agencies to combat gang activity.  During the event, four workshops were conducted, including Parent Engagement, Gang Awareness 101, the Safe School Campus Initiative, and San Jose’s Community Response Protocol.  Local residents who attended also had the opportunity to vote for the YAC-created PSA that would ultimately be produced by CreaTV to help raise gang awareness.

Public Service Announcement (PSA) TrainingJanuary 18, 2010

On Friday, January 15, the Youth Advisory Council of District 1 attended a Public Service Announcement Training at CreaTV in Downtown San Jose to better learn about film.

In collaboration with the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force as well as the rest of the San Jose Youth Commission, the Youth Advisory Council of District 1 is working on developing a Public Service Announcement relating to making positive choices for youth. The YAC has chosen gang violence as the focus because of its direct impact on the lives and families of teenagers. The YAC’s PSA will be displayed at the Mayor’s 2010 Crime and Gang Prevention Summit on January 23. At this summit, attendees will vote for their favorite PSA out of those developed by YAcs throughout the city. The winning PSA will go into production immediately following the summit.
